The Laboratory became the winner of the international Gravity Prize in the field of artificial intelligence and big data

The project “CDSS for pathologist”, developed by the Laboratory for Clinical Decision Support based on AI technologies, became the winner of the international university award “Gravity” in the “Discovery of the Year” category! The award ceremony took place on June 23 at the Presidential Academy. The award was accepted by the head of the Laboratory, Biryukov Alexander Alekseevich, and the general director of Intelligent Analytics LLC, the industrial partner of the Laboratory, Trostyansky Sergey Sergeevich.

The award is aimed at search for and promotion of the projects in the field of artificial intelligence and big data among universities in the CIS countries and is the largest award of its kind in Russia. The experts are representatives of federal executive authorities, leading universities in the country and representatives of the IT business. Project teams from leading universities are competing for the right to receive the prize: this year the winners were also representatives of Lomonosov Moscow State University, MGIMO, RANEPA, NUST MISIS, MEPhI, etc.

Receiving a prestigious award underscores the significance of the Laboratory’s developments for society and the economy of the Russian Federation and their high potential in the market. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most dangerous and aggressive oncological diseases, while there are serious staffing problems in this field of medicine: the average workload per pathologist exceeds 4.5 times the standard rate, and there are no automated solutions for histological examinations on the market for colorectal cancer. The Laboratory’s specialists are developing a computer aided system for pathomorphologists, designed to solve these problems: with the help of computer vision, we managed to automate the process of identifying metastases on histological scans. This software, if successfully implemented in medical organizations and laboratories, will help speed up the work of a pathologist up to 2 times.
